Robotics & Drones

​The Robotics program at Randolph Technical Center offers a specialized concentration that introduces students to the engineering design cycle, focusing on the creation and operation of Vex V5 autonomous robots using C++ coding. This program provides a comprehensive understanding of robotics engineering, including the principles of design, construction, and programming of robots. Additionally, the course includes a segment on drones, where students learn about basic aerodynamic concepts, drone maintenance, and programming for autonomous missions using Block and Python languages. This blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in robotics and drone technology prepares students for advanced studies or careers in the rapidly evolving field of robotics engineering.

Students who successfully complete the program earn an Embedded Math Credit and are also eligible to earn a Technology Credit.

Robotics Program of Study:

1866: Robotics I

Robotics I is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the world of VEX V5 Robotics. Participants will gain hands-on experience with the VEX V5 Robotics platform, learning fundamental concepts in robotics, programming in C++, and engineering.  VEX Robotics is not just a class; it's a platform for exploration, discovery, and hands-on learning that transcends traditional educational boundaries. This course is perfect for beginners and those with some prior robotics experience. Students with a curiosity for robotics and a willingness to learn are encouraged to enroll.

Robotics I 

1867: Robotics II

Robotics II is designed for students who have completed the introductory robotics course. Students will participate in exciting robotics competitions where they'll showcase their robots and programming skills. These events provide a unique opportunity to learn from others, make new friends, and experience the thrill of friendly competition. This course will also emphasize advanced programming techniques, strategic design, and effective teamwork. Students will delve deeper into the VEX Robotics ecosystem, gaining expertise in both hardware and software aspects to excel in VEX V5 challenges.  Participants should have a solid understanding of basic robotics concepts, programming, and VEX V5 hardware.

1887: Drones I (FAA 107 Ground Operations)

The Drones I course is designed to prepare students for the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Remote Pilot Certificate, also known as Part 107. This course provides comprehensive training on the regulations, procedures, and aeronautical knowledge required to operate small, unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) commercially in the United States. Participants will learn the necessary skills and knowledge to pass the FAA Part 107 exam and become certified remote pilots.  Students will also Explore the principles of flight as they learn to control and navigate their drones through various challenges. From mastering basic maneuvers to executing complex aerial tasks, you'll develop a deep understanding of drone flight dynamics.

1888: Drones II (FAA 107 Flight Operations)

Drones II is designed for students who have completed the introductory Drones I course. The LocoDroneT Voyager class is not just a course; it's an exploration into the cutting-edge realm of drone technology, where creativity and curiosity will be your compass. Throughout the program, you'll have the opportunity to elevate your skills by delving into the world of drone programming using Block Coding and Python.  Students will learn how to code their drones to perform autonomous flights and execute predefined tasks, unlocking a realm of possibilities in automation and artificial intelligence. Students will participate in exciting Drone competitions where they'll showcase their drones' programmed flight skills. These events provide a unique opportunity to learn from others, make new friends, and experience the thrill of friendly competition.

Meet the Instructor

​Katrina Riggleman, Robotics & Drones Instructor

​I am delighted to introduce myself as your Robotics & Drones Instructor at the Randolph Technical Center. After 30 years I have returned to my hometown, and I am thrilled to guide students on their journey into the world of robotics & drones.

A little bit about myself: I am passionate about robotics, technology, cybersecurity, drones, artificial intelligence, and the incredible possibilities they bring to your educational future. My background includes teaching IT, Computer Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Microsoft Applications and Design.  I have multiple industry certifications including ITS- Cybersecurity, MTA-Security Fundamentals, MOS-Word & PowerPoint, and Microsoft Certified Educator in Technology Literacy. I also have my FAA107 sUAS pilot license!

In this Robotics and Drones program, we won't just be learning about gears, circuits, and programming – we'll be diving headfirst into the realm of creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. My goal is to inspire you to think critically, work collaboratively, and, most importantly, have fun while exploring the fascinating world of robotics.
